maybe I can't understand your "I am unable to search my text book". Do you want to search it or in it?
What concerns a the search function in a pdf file, so it#s no problem in (my) Acrobat XI neither in the Adobe reader, if you use (written in my German programs): "Bearbeiten >>> Suchen >>> F3 or "Bearbeiten >>> erweiterte Suche >>> Shift+Strg+F
