You are on CP8, which means that shape buttons have THREE states: did you configure those states, or did you disable the Rollover and Down states? If you look in the Object style manager, you'll see that each shape has already styles for 3 states. I suspect that the rollover state is making the text invisible because of its Fill in contrast with a white text color.
