Can't change the background cell of a table

Hi I can't change the background of the colour of a cell. I can to it if I put the individual code but this is time consuming. Never had this problem before it doesn't give me the option to change the background colour, for example I can't use the eydropper tool anymore. Only to change the colour of the text, which I don't. Not sure what I"m doing wrong. I have updated to Yosemite or it could be more. Any help greatly appreciated
