Jacob, I worked for Adobe when SVG was developed as a WWW standard. At that time Flash was owned by Macromedia and the standard for vector graphics on the web. You needed an Adobe plug-in for your browser to see SVG content. It was a very cool plug-in, supported animation, font embedding an more. But unfortunately it was not used very much and the Browsers did not support it natively. Things have changed, Flash is less and less supported on devices and SVG has resurrected from the grave.
