I think you will find the default is App Store only apps for Gatekeeper but you can change prefs to allow download from anywhere.
Gatekeeper options are found in Apple menu >> System Preferences… >> Security & Privacy >> General tab under the header "Allow applications downloaded from:"
After installing you can change the prefs back again I you prefer.
