import finds no photos for import

Canon 20d (old one)

iMac 2007

OSX 10.10.2

Lightroom 5.7

Lightroom crashes after trying to import photos from camera ("hangs".  If i leave camera unplugged I can get to import, plug in camera, lightroom will properly identify camera as 20d, but "No Photos Found".  These are not duplicate photographs.  Tried resetting SMC on iMac.  It will import from iPhone.  No other devices attached to iMac.  Help?  Ideas?
